Black Rock Sports Auxiliary
Black Rock Sports Auxiliary is a group of volunteer citizens who now raise funds to improve the facilities at the Sandringham Hospital.
The inaugural meeting of the Black Sports Auxiliary was held on 5th May 1950. The aim of the Auxiliary at that time was to assist in providing funds for the building of the Sandringham & District Memorial Hospital.
The Royal Melbourne Golf Club were approached to help support the Auxiliary’s fund-raising efforts, and an exhibition golf day in December 1951, was the commencement of their assistance which remains as an ongoing association today. The exhibition match was played between 0 Pickworth, R Wright, V J. Harris and E Naismith
Our first Golf Day was held on the 10th of September 1952 with 306 players participating. Gross proceeds exceeded 1000 pounds. The entry tee was 10 shillings. By 1954 player numbers had risen to 706 and first tee off times had moved back from 8:15am to 5:30am to accommodate the extra players. Events contested were men’s four ball and mixed foursomes.
Other sporting bodies assistance and aid was sought to hasten fund raising under the auspices of the Auxiliary amongst which were lawn bowls, golf clubs and associates’ golf days.
The Auxiliary eventually saw its work come to fruition when. on the 15th of March 1964, the Hospital was officially opened by His Excellency, the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe.
The Auxiliary’s work since the opening of the Hospital has remained as important as ever with equipment along with patient expectations of hospital facilities requiring continual upgrading and review. Beds, patient phones, bedside lockers: maternity suite upgrade, instrument washing machines, a mobile x-ray machine, a foetal monitoring machine tele-imaging equipment and electric beds are among some of the items funded by the Auxiliary’s efforts.
Beaumaris Rotary
Beaumaris Rotary was formed in 1985 and has been serving communities both locally and overseas ever since
In 1992 then Sandringham Council Mayor Lesley Falloon along with the Rotary Clubs of Beaumaris and Sandringham created a charity golf day at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club. This day was known as the Bayside Mayoral Charity Golf Day. Money from this day was shared by the two Rotary clubs and used to support their various activities including the Sandringham hospital.
When /the Royal Melbourne Golf Club signalled that they wished to rationalize their involvement in these events BRSA and Beaumaris Rotary worked with them to develop a new. joint day: The Bayside Charity Golf Day, combining the best elements of both historic days.
